BMW Scrambler Arriving in Late 2016






BMW just created a cost effective , a brand new range of stylish bikes based on the R nineT

With a Scrambler version leading the way , BMW are on the verge of revealing a range of lower cost R nineT-based bikes.

Two of the low-cost models are expected to arrive in late 2016, the Scrambler might arrive by the end of this year. The German firm keept no secrets of their intent to keep the air-cooled boxer engine in production, saying that they can easily meet ever-more stringent emissions regulations by keeping the state of tune relatively low.



The R nineT’s 110bhp and 88ftlb of torque is realistically the peak performance we can expect from the twin-cam head 8v motor. But where BMW have been notably clever is in extending the life of the engine by tailoring the applications it’s used in to fit its performance parameters, rather than trying to evolve the motor to fit ever-more demanding bikes.

The new liquid-cooled version of the 1200 boxer now is powering the GS, GSA, R, RT and RS, and the air-cooled version is off the hook to continue powering more characterful applications.



The R nineT has been a huge success for BMW, 8488 scramblers sold globally in 2014, making it the fourth most successful bike in their range behind the two leaders R1200GS, and the class-leading R1200RT.

BMW’s nineT is forming one of the cornerstones of the more expensive end of that scene with so much interest in the customisation scene, the factory have quickly latched on to the opportunity to sell pre-customised options. In addition, offering a lower cost blank canvas version for customisers opens the bike up to a whole new audience previously put off by the price of the nineT, and the thought of undoing BMW’s high-end work.


The expected ‘blank canvas’ versionwill be the lowest cost model . The roadster looks like will be familiar, the suspension, other cycle parts and tank will all be lower-spec than the nineT. BMW expect that most of these will be ripped apart to form the basis of myriad bobbers, café-racers, street trackers, and anything else in the range of custom-builders’ imaginations.



Sitting above this naked roadster will be two further models, just like Yamaha’s Sports Heritage range and Ducati’s four-bike range of new Scramblers, these two further models recognise that many buyers want the style and character, but don’t own the spanners, tig-welders and rattle-can skills to achieve the look. And perhaps have neither the time nor patience to effect such projects.

While no official images are available, we were able to get these pics based on descriptions from European dealers who expected this as a late 2015 model. The underpinnings are very clearly nineT, but with all the expensive elements supplanted by more basic ones, and styled to ape the early GS era.



Success will depend on BMW being able to hit the right price point, but dealers suggest that this is at the forefront of BMW’s plan. While the base model could cost nearly £7000, it’s more likely that the Scrambler will cost more like £8000, along with the other pre-styled version, which we believe will be a more café-racer orientated offering.

The excitement and immediate sales success of Ducati’s £6895–£7995 Scrambler will have been the driving force for BMW to rush out their take on the genre ahead of its siblings, but the arrival order post-Scrambler is less clear. It would seem likely that the other two models will arrive simultaneously during 2016, although possibly as late as the big European shows in the Autumn.



Why the delay?

Well the BMW production lines are already creaking under the massive increase in demand over the last few years, and with boxer engined bikes accounting for the top four sales figures in BMW’s range, it’s the busiest of all the production lines.

The R1200GS pairing achieved over 40,000 units last year, while the RT cleared another 12,140. In addition to those, 2015 sees the arrival of a completely redesigned and now water-cooled R1200R, and the re-introduction of the RS, also based around the new R1200 platform. It’s going to be another busy year, and the reinvigoration of the air-cooled range will remain key to the firm’s sales volume.

2014 BMW R 1200 RT REVIEW

It was a bit of a surprise being out in the middle of Arizona and seeing wet snowfall so thick that visibility began to drop down to less than 150 feet. And a glance at the ambient temperature gauge on the instrument panel showed a balmy 28.4 degrees Fahrenheit, accompanied by the apropos snowflake icon. Under normal circumstances my outer appendages would be screaming, “Frostbite!” at me, and I would soon be looking for someplace to stop in order to stop my teeth from chattering.



Instead, I’m quite comfortable sitting behind the copious fairing of BMW’s latest R 1200 RT—though having to wipe off the accumulating snow on the windscreen was growing annoying. I even had to turn down the heat level on the heated seat and grips to keep them from getting too toasty on this rolling lap of luxury. And yet hours earlier, I was having a blast scything down a mountain pass at a pace that would have many supersport bikes sweating—all while some nice jazz tunes from the onboard satellite radio serenaded me.
Following the debut of the latest-generation R 1200 GS last year, it was inevitable that the other boxer twins in BMW’s catalog would soon begin to see the trickle-down of technological upgrades, and the RT is the latest recipient. That means the same all-new DOHC 1,170cc boxer twin engine utilizing liquid cooling instead of the previous engine’s oil-cooling setup. The “liquid” term is a bit of a misnomer, though; the coolant is only routed around the combustion chamber, with the rest of the cylinder head and cylinders themselves still air-cooled (though BMW says the new wasser­boxer has a higher liquid/air-cooling ratio at 35/65 versus the previous “oil head” engine at 22/78).



The new boxer engine shares little more than bore and stroke dimensions with its predecessor. To start, the cylinder heads have been rotated to a more efficient downdraft intake on top and exhaust on the bottom (instead of intake aft and exhaust forward). Doing so realized numerous benefits, including moving the intake plumbing away from the rider’s shins and keeping the cam drive from interfering with the intake ports. More efficient cooling meant that compression ratio could rise a half-point to 12.5:1, and the more compact combustion chamber allows the deletion of the previous dual-spark-plug arrangement to a single plug. As with the R 1200 GS Adventure tested elsewhere in this issue, the crankshaft gained 2 pounds for 20 percent more flywheel effect, with the RT gaining an additional 1.3 pounds rotational mass due to the larger, more powerful alternator. As with the GS and Adventure, the RT’s new engine is claimed to produce 125 hp at 7,750 rpm (15 more than its predecessor) and 92 foot-pounds of torque (3 foot-pounds more) at 6,500 rpm.
Another huge change is the transmission now resides in the engine cases just below the crankshaft instead of a separate assembly attached to the rear. The clutch is now a wet multi-plate unit (instead of the overheat-prone single-disc dry clutch) that now can be serviced from the front of the engine cases, rather than the massive disassembly required to drop and then pull apart the engine and transmission as before. That new clutch also has both a slipper function on deceleration and a power-assist setup under acceleration that allows lighter clutch springs.


The RT also receives the same “continuous” tubular steel bridge-type frame as the latest GS/Adventure that features increased rigidity for improved handling and feel. Its design provides a narrower area between the rider’s legs, allowing a slightly slimmer seat that makes it easier to reach the ground. The frame also permitted the entire ergonomic triangle (the distance/relationship between the handlebar, seat, footpegs, and ground) for both rider and passenger to be lowered 0.8 inch; this negated the need for the previously offered “low suspension” version of the RT, as the two-way-adjustable standard-height seat (31.7 to 32.5 inches) is available in an optional lower edition (29.9 to 30.7 inches), as well as a taller variant (32.7 to 33.5 inches).
The full upgraded electronics suite from the latest GS makes its way to the RT as well, in addition to some other new rider aid features. The previous ESA II (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) and ASC (Automatic Stability Control) traction control/ABS integrated system can now be bolstered by the optional Dynamic ESA semi-active suspension that automatically tailors damping settings according to riding conditions. Another option is Ride Mode Pro, which adds to the standard Rain and Road settings by offering the Dynamic riding mode, which provides optimum throttle response and higher threshold intervention from the traction control and ABS. Ride Mode Pro also includes the Hill Start Control, which activates the rear brake to help hold the motorcycle in place on an incline and allow easier movement from a stop.
The Shift Assist Pro (SAP) quickshifter is another option for the RT—but with an important twist. While the same clutchless/no-throttle-let-off upshifts as on other BMWs can be easily accomplished, the RT’s SAP now allows clutchless downshifts as well. When the rider nudges the shift lever, the RT’s ECU automatically blips the ride-by-wire throttle plates to match rpm to road speed for the lower gear.
As mentioned in the beginning, the redesigned fairing (with new twin high-beam/single low-beam headlight available with BMW’s signature Corona Ring lighting around the high-beam headlights as an option) does an excellent job of keeping you insulated from the wind and elements. The electrically adjustable windscreen offers a very good range of movement (there’s an optional taller screen), and although it automatically retracts upon bike shutdown, a memory function returns it to the exact position you previously selected once back underway. Aerodynamics show a lot of refinement, as there is very little trailing turbulence that pushes on your back with the windscreen in its tallest position.

Unlike some other full-color TFT (Thin Film Transistor) dash displays we can think of, the BMW’s panel is easily readable in daylight, and all the information from the onboard computer is nicely laid out and/or easily accessible via the menu toggle button and multi-controller ring on the left handlebar. The extensive menu can seem a bit intimidating at first, but as with most BMWs we’ve tested, it’s fairly intuitive, and navigating soon becomes second nature.
Speaking of navigating, all of the bikes at the press launch were fully loaded with most options, meaning ours was equipped with BMW’s superb Navigator 5 GPS unit. The instrument panel comes pre-wired and set up for the GPS unit (you can also get an RT without the dashboard set up for GPS) integrated into the top of the dash just below your line of sight. The touchscreen reacts to gloved hands, is easily navigable, its display is easily seen in daylight, and its GPS positioning and information provided at a glance was excellent 99 percent of the time.
The engine upgrades have created a boxer twin that no longer needs the word “flat” in its description. Like its predecessor, there’s plenty of instant torque available right off idle—but there’s a lot more of it—and the powerband remains smooth and seamless. Instead of power and acceleration tailing off rapidly toward the 6,000-rpm mark, however, the new engine continues pulling until 8,000 rpm with much more authority than before. No, the RT is obviously no supersport, and it doesn’t quite have the punch of sportier mounts like a Kawasaki Ninja 1000 or even larger bikes like Yamaha’s FJR1300; but getting to your destination as quickly as possible wasn’t in the BMW’s design brief. The new boxer powerplant has more than enough steam to move the RT along at a rapid pace, especially in the twisties.
Throttle response in the Dynamic riding mode is as its moniker suggests; acceleration is much livelier at initial throttle openings than the other two riding modes, Road and Rain, which are intended for highway/city and wet-weather scenarios, respectively. But the response is never abrupt off closed throttle or overly aggressive.
The new transmission is definitely smoother and less clunky than past boxer gearboxes, and the wet clutch easily stands up to more abuse than the previous dry unit. We liked the SAP quickshifter, especially in the canyons where it was fun to do rapid-fire downshifts without the clutch and listen to the auto-blip throttle do its job. The quickshifter isn’t as dialed in as the unit on the S 1000 RR, though; the engine’s abundance of flywheel effect makes the upshift between first and second gear an exercise in whiplash unless you’re past 50 mph (and even then it’s hard on the gearbox), so it’s best to use the good ol’-fashioned manual clutch method in the first three gears when cruising through the city.
Overall handling is very light and surprisingly agile for a bike that weighs some 600 pounds. Turn-in is easy and responsive, and the RT carves tighter lines than you’d expect for a bike with a 58.5-inch wheelbase. Feedback from the front is a little numb compared to standard telescopic forks, but once you get used to trusting the Telelever front suspension, the BMW can make serious time in the canyons. Ground clearance is very good despite the pegs being lowered almost an inch, helped by the Dynamic ESA’s ability to stiffen up the suspension damping at the right times during cornering.
Thankfully BMW has allowed you to modify each riding mode’s suspension firmness to your preference. Both spring preload (four settings) and damping rates (three settings) can be adjusted independently, and the difference is very discernible between each one. The Dynamic ESA really shines here; adjusted to its middle damping setting, you can float over bumps on the highway, yet the suspension stiffens up nicely once you start carving turns in the canyons.
Stopping power from the Brembo monoblock calipers biting on 320mm discs is very good, and feel and feedback are much better than you’d expect for an ABS-equipped brake system. Lever effort was a little on the high side but nothing obtrusive. The Hill Start Control feature is an interesting rider aid; pulling firmly on the front brake lever at a stop activates a hydraulic pump on the rear brake that holds the bike in place (it releases past a certain point), and the rider only needs to concentrate on clutch and throttle engagement to take off on an incline. It was a little unnerving at first to not have our foot or finger on the brake when starting off, but the system seemed to work fine.
The amount of technology packed into the new R 1200 RT is impressive, and it could’ve easily gone wrong had everything not been carefully developed to work together as a package. BMW has become very adept at doing this, and that technology has vaulted its latest boxer-twin sport-tourer from what used to be a somewhat staid, lackluster machine into a bike that’s a lot more fun to ride than many “sportier” mounts we can think of. For those able to afford the more-than-$20K sticker, it’s money well spent.

New BMW 300cc Roadster

BMW are surging ahead with plans to enter the small bike market – with what’s believed to be a 300cc roadster spotted testing in Germany last week.


Developed in association with Indian automotive giant, TVS, the small-capacity bike– codenamed K03 according to recent paperwork assigned to a prototype shipped from Germany to India – was spied testing near the HQ of BMW’s Research and Design division. Despite a fleeting glimpse of the bike being captured last year, this is the first time the machine has been seen with any clarity.
BMW are remaining as tight-lipped as always in the run-up to the release of a new model, but despite the fairly rough and ready state of this test mule, we can see how the finished machine is likely to look.
The test bike appears to use a water-cooled, four-stroke single cylinder engine of around 300cc. This sort of capacity is in line with the competition from rival manufacturers, and is the most competitive part of the market in developing countries. MCN expect there will be other styles of bike built around the same basic platform, to comprise a range of up to three new models, most likely a roadster, sportsbike, and a GS-alike trailie.
The link up with Indian bike giant TVS is a sensible and cost-effective way for the premium German brand to gain a firm foothold in developing markets. It also grants the Indian company access to BMW’s first-rate design, engineering and R&D facilities.
There was rumour the new BMW/TVS collaboration might be based on the TVS Draken X-21 that was shown last year, but this test mule appears to share almost nothing with that bike in terms of chassis and engine – while some of the running gear looks familiar – suggesting that this is an almost completely clean-sheet design.
However well resolved this prototype looks, a production version is unlikely to break cover until 2016.
BMW head of motorcycles Stephan Schaller previously told MCN: “In terms of the sub-500cc bikes we are still some years away from these models being on sale as that is how long it takes to develop something completely new and these are bikes that are being developed by both BMW and TVS. There is no difference from any other BMW in the way they are being designed. They will be sold in Europe as well as the developing market. Having entry-level bikes like this is important.”

2014 v 2015 BMW S1000RR

BMW claims their new, third-generation S1000RR is lighter and more powerful than ever. We’re putting that to the test by pitching the new machine against the out-going model.
We’ll speed test both Beemers and strap them to our dyno to see if the new bike really does makemore power at the back wheel and if it can get close to the German firm’s claimed 199bhp power figure.
We’ve already ridden the 2015 S1000RR on-track at its launch in November and we were amazed by its easy speed, but to find out if it behaves itself just as well in the real world, we’ll also be riding it on the road… so it’s a good job it has heated grips!

2015 BMW S1000RR: 198bhp on the dyno!!

Some of the UK's first 2015 BMW S1000RRs have already been tested on dynos and are producing 198bhp at the back wheel.
Race teams are starting to receive their new-model 2015 BMW S1000RRs in preparation for the coming season.


Prime Factors Racing, who will be contesting the World Endurance Championship next year with Gary Mason, Lee Johnston and Stefan Capella, are running their first S1000RRs in on the dyno and have already witnessed impressive power figures.


Bruce Charman, Prime Factors’ managing director explains: “The first of our RRs we’ve put on our dyno, with bog stock tyres and exhaust, is already making 198bhp at the rear wheel.

“Last year our HP4s with which we won the ACU National Endurance championship with produced 186bhp in stock trim and we got those up to 195bhp by the end. We expect to see well over 200bhp by the time the bike is fitted with a race exhaust and fully run-in.”

2010 BMW S1000RR | WILD CHILD


In 2010, Dystany ran an 8.61 @ 163.61 MPH on a stretched and bolt-on upgraded S1000RR during the Manufacturer’s Cup Finals in Valdosta, GA. It wasn’t long after that she jotted down “Bimmer” on her birthday wish list. Her dream came true and after the excitement of unwrapping an S1000RR subsided aftermarket additions converted a stock bike into a killer at the strip.
Freddy at Killer Kreations took Dystany’s favorite color, hot pink, and created a scheme with wicked edge to match the bike’s performance. Adding flavor came compliments of airbrush work that cartooned Dystany on the tank and showcased her race number on the fairing face. Pattern artwork and a paint- splatter effect added onto the black frame and lower tank panels made it a showstopper. The bolt-ons added further bite.
A full Akrapovic exhaust system gave it a raucous roar and DME Racing’s 67-inch extended swingarm kept the front planted under throttle-heavy launches off the light. Vortex sprockets, MPS air shifter and a light EK O-Ring chain helped propel this moto-missle 1,320 feet to a best time of 8.47 @ 158 MPH. R&G; Racing crash protectors wait in the ready if traction gives way. Pink and proud, this two-wheeled strip star routinely turns heads far before it reaches the burnout box and runs consistent 8.60s thanks to a pilot who is actually considering a new speed-rich sport called NASCAR—we hope bikes stay in her blood.
When a college-aged girl goes shopping for a BMW, a 3-Series convertible is usually on her mind. But while a German coupe might be the desired ride for some young women, Dystany Spurlock is no ordinary 20-year-old. She opted for the much meaner S1000RR. Complete with excessive power and a list of gadgets, this bike is a rocket ship that will put an M-Series driver to shame. Dystany comes from a lineage of riders including a godfather who drag raced. Her first bike, a 2006 GSX-R750 helped her get acquainted with the strip but when the Gixxer wasn’t enough, it was swapped for what you see here.

Brand New 2015 BMW S1000RR

BMW has updated the cylinder head and intake system, ultimately growing peak power figures by 6 horsepower and increasing torque figures near 5000 rpm. Specific changes include reshaped intake and exhaust ports, a new cam shape for the intake camshaft, plus lighter intake valves and intake valve springs. The velocity stacks were shortened (the variable length system remains), which in combination with the aforementioned changes, improves the engine’s ability to get the exhaust gases out of the cylinder and the fresh air/fuel mix in. Moreover, the servo motor acting on BMW’s ride-by-wire throttle valves was made smaller, which enabled engineers to grow the airbox and go to a fully symmetric design for optimized power output.
Small updates, big difference
Spent gases exit a newly shaped exhaust with twin-pipe design and no under-engine canister, updates which combine to lower back-pressure and increase torque at medium revs. The exhaust looks better in person than it does in pictures, and contributes to a massive 6.6 pound decrease in overall weight. Like any other BMW S 1000 RR exhaust, the system has a bark that dwarfs the exhaust note of any other OE exhaust system. And need we mention again its 6.6 pounds lighter







Standard riding modes include Rain, Sport, and Race, but you can upgrade to the Pro riding mode, which features two additional riding modes, Slick and User, along with Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), which is adjustable between -7 to 0 to +7 settings when riding in Slick or User. In addition to this, the Pro riding mode includes launch control as well as a programmable pit lane limiter, electronic functions that are very easily controlled by the starter button. In User mode, riders can select a setting for the Race ABS, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), and Dynamic Damping Control (DDC) suspension. In the other modes, these settings are determined for you..

While the S 1000 RR doesn't have a dedicated wheelie control feature, the optional DTC system does mitigate wheelies. Re-tuned settings allow the bike to carry small wheelies in modes lower than Race without dropping the front wheel back to the ground in a manner that'll hurt your, ugh, sensitive bits
No, BMW didn’t need to update its S 1000 RR, but we’re glad they did.
